Take A Closer Look At The ASICS EX89 ‘Knicks’ Trainer

A Low-Top Basketball Trainer From 1989

The ASICS EX89 ‘Kicks’ trainer revives Toshikazu Kayano’s Gel-Extreme which first came on the sneaker scene back in 1989.

The last 5 years or so has marked a whole new era for the trainer game where outside designers and streetwear labels have changed the face of traditional sportswear brands. There was Kanye West with adidas, who created one of the biggest sub labels a sportswear brand has probably ever witnessed. The late Virgil Abloh’s ‘The Ten’ with Nike added a contemporary spin to classic swoosh designs. Teddy Santis & Aimé Leon Dore have arguably made New Balance one of the hottest footwear brands on the market right now thanks to revival styles like the 550 & the exclusive Made in USA line. If we’re talking about ASICS, which this feature is mainly about, it’s KITH’s Ronnie Fieg who recently released the EX89 from the archives back in November. Thanks to this collaboration with the highly celebrated New York streetwear creative, the low-top basketball trainer is now treated to another re-release with the introduction of the ASICS EX89 ‘Knicks’ trainer for December 2022.

Although Toshikazu Kayano was known mainly for his design work on the Gel Kayano line, he also designed the low-top basketball trainer, the Gel-Extreme. First released in 1989 the OG court shoe was worn by the likes of Kurt Rambis & Michael Cooper of the Los Angeles Lakers. Revived by Ronnie Fieg from the archives as the ASICS EX89, the classic court silhouette now returns in a New York Knicks inspired colourway with white leather uppers and contrasting tiger stripes in illusion blue to the sidewalls. Other highlights include perforations to the toe box in classic late 1980s style as well as a grey mesh tongue and FF BLAST™ sole technology for all day comfort.
