We take a look at the history of the Supreme x Stone Island collaboration and how it reached grail status to become one of the most collectible streetwear collaborations of all time.
Supreme and Stone Island are already some of the biggest brands on the entire planet. Supreme’s influence on the New York streetwear scene over the last 25 years has been absolutely huge. The same goes for Stone Island in Europe & technical sportswear with their unique fabrics and garment innovation. There’s truly only one way to elevate both brands and that’s by combining them both. The history of the Supreme x Stone Island collaboration started back in 2014 and it’s legacy on the streetwear world is just has big today. For the Autumn/Winter 2014 season we saw the very first collaboration between the two giants that would come to be the starting point of some of the most hyped up collaborations in modern day streetwear releases.
Supreme x Stone Island Autumn/Winter 2014 (released October 2014)
Taking it back to October 2014 and the first Supreme x Stone Island capsule release for Autumn/Winter 2014. The hyped release has really set the standard for many more streetwear collaborations. The Supreme x Stone Island Autumn/Winter 2014 collection was well received on both sides of the Atlantic & perfectly captured the DNA of both brands. All pieces for this collection, except for the Supreme camp cap, were made by Stone Island for Supreme. The camp cap however was made by Supreme, in one of Stone Islands’ signature fabrics, Raso Gommato.
The highlight of the collection was undoubtfully the Raso Gommato Cover Nero Jacket. The classic “Stoney” piece featured a wind & water resistant cotton satin outer shell combined with a puffy inner jacket. The jacket is a two piece jacket meaning both the shell and the inner jacket can be detached and worn separately. The outer-piece also featured a removable hood with attached futuristic style sunglasses and came in yellow, forest camo and black. The rest of the collection featured hooded and crewneck sweatshirts, matching sweatpants and the classic Supreme camp cap in white, black, red and forest camo.
Supreme x Stone Island Spring/Summer 2015 (released April 2015)
The following year Supreme and Stone Island joined forces again for their second collaborative capsule. For the Spring/Summer 2015 collection Stone Island’s innovative garment expertise would come to shine through. In a press release prior to the Autumn/Winter 2014 collaboration, Supreme spoke on the Italian brand and their unique use of colours and fabrics, something the second collaboration between the two would vouch for.
The stand-out piece of the collection was the 5C Anorak, a classic Stone Island silhouette used in their first collection ever. The anorak is dressed in a “Nylon Metal” fabric, a nylon yarn material that appears to change colour, originally created by Stone Island prior to the collection. Supreme completed the piece with a paisley pattern print that comes in both blue and red. The rest of the collection included two matching paisley patterned hats and a striped long sleeve top.
Supreme x Stone Island Spring/Summer 2016 (released March 2016)
The Spring/Summer 2015 collaboration suffered an early leak as it hit Stone Islands German web-shop before intended. The collaboration was successful nevertheless and it wouldn’t take long until the brands teamed up again for their next venture a year later in 2016. As mentioned earlier many Supreme collaborations go by a “the longer the relationship the more we push the boundaries” tradition. As seen in other link-ups like the Supreme x Levi’s capsules bolder prints and fabrics tend to come into play after a few years of collaborative work. The Spring/Summer 2016 Supreme x Stone Island collection gave us exactly that.
The stand out piece of the collection came in the form of the Heat Reactive Trench Coat which as you probably already know utilised Stone Island’s thermosensitive fabric as seen on the Stone Island Camouflage Ice Jacket from the 1990s. Other pieces from the collection included the Nylon Metal fabric which saw Stone Island’s iconic nylon metal fabric in a vibrant orange colourway. Fans of the collaboration were also treated to a reflective compass sweater a PVC duffle bag & a matching Heat Reactive 6 panel to team up with the trench coat.
Supreme x Stone Island Autumn/Winter 2017 (released October 2017)
As you can see there’s a pattern here. The jackets are the “stand out” pieces in pretty much every collection, and for the Autumn/Winter 2017 collaboration we saw not one but two jacket silhouettes with their own unique features. The floral printed Lamy Cover Stampato Puffy Jacket featured a removable hood and a face-mask, a popular concept they’d use again in their Spring/Summer 2019 release. Like previous years, the collection also featured a matching set of floral print Lamy Nylon 6 pan hats. The anorak makes a second appearance in the Supreme x Stoney partnership with the Poly Cover Composite Anorak. The water and wind resistant pieces came in black, blue and yellow and were said to be opaque meaning they are partly see-through. A set of matching reflective hoodies, sweatpants and tees featuring the two brands combined logo also released for the Autumn/Winter 2017 collaboration.
Supreme x Stone Island Spring/Summer 2019 (released March 2019)
Many streetwear fan’ hearts were broken as 2018 went without a collaboration, but the two giants made sure to make it up to us with their stunning Spring/Summer 2019 release. Yet again jackets were a big focal point, but the set of camo decorated garms were definitely the pieces that reached grail status. The Riot Mask Camo Jacket with its matching cargo pants, vest and accessories came in a subtle camo in orange and grey and was heavily inspired by tactical-wear.
The rest of the collection included basic hoodies and pocket-tees but also the New Silk Light Jacket which gave a nod to Stoney’s legendary Toffee Wrapper jacket from 1992. A double dyed jacket made to give a three-dimensional liquid effect finished off with a detachable lining inspired by lacing systems used in the sailing world. Matching New Silk pants and hat were also released for what is probably the strongest collection between the two so far.
Supreme x Stone Island Autumn/Winter 2020 (released November 2020)
Moving into November 2020, the Autumn/Winter 2020 collection featured a hand-painted sheepskin parka with rubberised compass branding to the rear. Stone Island’s love for camouflage was also brought to life with a paintball camouflage nylon rep down jacket which also came with a matching 6 panel hat, combat pants, t-shirt & bag. Other items from the Autumn/Winter 2020 drop included a gauge 5 knitted balaclavas, Baruffaldi Rek Goggles, garment dyed corduroy coats with matching pants & a Marina inspired striped hoody with matching shorts. The lookbook also featured the Northampton born UK rapper, Slowthai, who rose to fame with ‘Nothing Great About Britain’ in 2019.
Supreme x Stone Island Spring/Summer 2022 (released May 2022)
After missing a release for 2021, which no doubt had some supply chain issues from the global pandemic, Supreme & Stone Island returned for another celebrated collaboration between the compass logo & box logo. Featuring a reversible resin coated nylon faux fur jacket & a heat sensitive pigment printed Reactive Ice Camo Ripstop jacket which gave a nod to the Ice Jacket archive styles from the 1990s. Other releases from the 2022 drop included a Mona Lisa print across a water resistant jacket & t-shirt as well as a striped hooded sweatshirt and matching pants.
We certainly hope the Supreme x Stone Island collaborations become a yearly thing. And although it’s got a few years left to reach the legendary status of the The North Face collaboration, it’s fair to say they’re well on their way.
