The Supreme x The North Face AW22 collection revives TNF’s Steep Tech line which was first introduced in 1991 for extreme skiers.
Although it was designed specifically for extreme skiers, Steep Tech’s connection to New York’s streetwear scene is arguably as big as Supreme itself. Originally designed by Scot Schmidt, the concept of Steep Tech was like nothing before it. It was all about protecting the athlete from the harshest mountain conditions. Padding & protection inspired from motorcycle jackets & designs’ drawing inspiration from parachute suits. If you had to explain Steep Tech to the novice’ North Face fan it would be something like “ski suits for super heroes”. First launched in 1991 Steep Tech took conventional ski wear and made it cool. Original styles like the Apogee One set the benchmark as far as early 90s skiwear was concerned. Functional gear with reinforcements at the knees and elbows with loads of pockets to hold everything the extreme skier needed. Some of the most expensive TNF gear available at the time, Step Tech quickly struck a chord with NYC’s homegrown hip hop scene. A key outerwear style on the streets of New York throughout its 7 year lifeline (1991-1998), it’s no surprise really that Supreme & The North Face wanted to revive it back in 2016. Steep Tech now returns with the very latest Supreme x The North Face AW22 collection.
For the latest Steep Tech collection The North Face has teamed up with Supreme once again, continuing their collaboration which goes all the way back to 2007. Featuring the Steep Tech Apogee jacket & pants which reives the original design from Scot Schmidt with a water resistant nylon shell & reinforced padding to the arms & legs. There’s also the 700 Fill Down parka which features a water resistant poly fabric in some classic 90s NYC inspired colourways. Polar Fleece features across the Steep Tech pullover & pants. Finally there’s also the Steep Tech backpack & waist bag which both feature a water resistant poly & ballistic nylon.
