The PUMA Wimbledon trainer is once again revived courtesy of the Noah x PUMA Pro Star collaboration trainer release which gives a nod to the original tennis trainer from the late 1970s.

The late 1970s and early 1980s marked a seismic shift in sportswear with the prestigious tennis tournament Wimbledon becoming a catwalk of Casual fashion. The one-upmanship of the era’s new found Casual subculture was also prevalent in the sportswear brands themselves, mainly adidas & PUMA. Fuelled by a bitter brotherly rivalry of the Dassler brothers it wasn’t uncommon for designs to be copied, reworked and renamed at the height of the fiercest sportswear competition the world has probably ever seen. Tennis was a prime example of just how competitive these two brothers actually were. Adi Dassler officially gave us the Stan Smith in 1978, probably one of the most iconic tennis silhouettes of all time. PUMA followed up with the PUMA Wimbledon trainer which also dropped around the same time. The classic court shoe is now once again revived courtesy of the Noah x PUMA Pro Star trainer release which gives a nod to the original tennis trainer.

Noah x PUMA Pro Star WimbledonAs adidas had dominated the courts in the 1970s with the likes of Stan Smith, Robert Haillet, John Newcombe & Rod Laver, each I may add all had their own signature shoes, PUMA obviously wanted a piece of the action. Wimbledon was where new stars were born. It was where brands like Fila & Sergio Tacchini became the next generation of sought after sportswear labels. The PUMA Wimbledon trainer marked a new era of “lets & nets” for the German sportswear brand with endorsements with Argentinian tennis royalty like Guillermo Vilas & the German Wunderkid Boris Becker throughout the 1980s.

Noah x PUMA Pro Star WimbledonFollowing on from their previous collaborations on their ‘Made in Japan’ Clyde trainer which dropped earlier in the year, the New York streetwear brand teams up with PUMA once again for September 2023. Delving into the Herzogenaurach archives for a modern day spin on the original Wimbledon trainer from the late 1970s, the Noah x PUMA Pro Star trainers features smooth ‘off white’ leather uppers with perforations to the sidewalls and toe vamp for that classic court trainer aesthetic. Finished off with gold foil branding to the sides, collaboration branding to the tongue and a contrasting green ankle, the Pro Star is classic court chic with a hint of NYC’s finest.
