The latest Y-3 Autumn/Winter 2023 drop features a selection of technical sportswear garb & is a testament to Yohji Yamamoto’s legacy at the top of Japanese sportswear.
It’s pretty insane to think that the Japanese designer, Yohji Yamamoto, will turn 80 this year. The closest thing my Grandma had seen to street culture at that age was probably a packable Peter Storm cagoule she’d bought at the market in the 1980s without really knowing it was a bit tasty. Usually teamed up with a Kwik Save carrier bag and a plastic rain bonnet it was working class Northern garb at its very finest. Casual OAP’s aside, 2023 also marks the 20th anniversary of Y-3. Originating from an era of polyphonic ringtones, early noughties sportswear & OG Grime. I remember Y-3 featuring in the Crazy Titch video ‘I Can C U’ as I tried to make sense of this new “London sound”. Y-3 was also pretty big on the Casual scene. It was designer sportswear at its very finest. Merging Yamamoto’s Japanese streetwear designs with classic adidas, it was a marriage made in heaven. This latest Y-3 Autumn/Winter 2023 drop is a testament to Yamamoto’s legacy at the top of the Japanese sportswear game.
The Y-3 latest collection for Autumn/Winter 2023 maintains the classic Japanese sportswear aesthetics of the Tokyo born brand with modern trends. A nod to vintage varsity style runs across graphic hoodies & logo tees in a kettle stitch embroidery. Outerwear goes big for the colder months with duck down filled puffer jackets & PrimaLoft® insulated bomber jackers. There’s also Ripstop pants, knitted sweats as well as a selection of headwear which utilises an updated strap logo. On the footwear side of things there’s the Marathon TR trainer which gets the Yamamoto treatment as well as the legendary Gazelle trainer.
